The Mediterranean region is exposed to a wide range of natural hazards. Among such hazards the most devastating with regard to the population’s safety and damage to cultural heritage is the seismic risk. The most vulnerable areas to seismic risk include the Aegean sea and Western Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean, Italy in the Central Mediterranean, the North African Coast in the Western Mediterranean, Eastern Anatolia and the Jordan Valley in the Middle East. The risk of climate related events (flash floods, floods, heavy snow, wildfires etc.) impacting on populations, infrastructures, economies and cultural heritage is also quite high in the Mediterranean region. The density of cultural heritage sites which characterizes the Mediterranean region represents an important source of income for its countries as well as an important component of the identity of Mediterranean people.
لا شك أنّ المنطقة المتوسطية تتعرض لأخطار طبيعية متعددة من بينها الزلازل وهي الأكثر ضررا بخصوص حماية السكان و الأضرار التي يمكن أن تلحق بالتراث الثقافي. فتشكل بحر إيجة و تركيا الغربية في المنطقة المتوسطية الشرقية و إيطاليا في وسط البحر المتوسط و أنتوليا الشرقية و الوادي الأردني في الشرق الأوسط وهي من الأماكن التي تعاني من خطر الزلازل على نحو واسع. و كذلك تداعيات الأحداث المناخية الشديدة (الفيضانات و الطوفان المفاجئ و الثلج القوي و الحرائق المدمرة وإليخ) تعصف بالسكان و البنيات التحتية و الإقتصادية و التراث الثقافي للمنطقة المتوسطية و هي مخاطر متكررة الحدوث. تتميز المنطقة المتوسطية بعدد هائل من المعالم الأثرية التي تعتبر المصدر الأساسي للدخل الوطني لكل الدول المتوسطية إضافة إلى عنصرمهم لبناء ههوية الشعوب الذين يعيشون حول البحر الأبيض المتوسط

האזור הרגיש ביותר לסיכונים סיסמיים כולל את הים האגאי ומערב תורכיה במזרח הים התיכון, איטליה במרכז הים התיכון, החוף הצפון אפריקאי במערב הים התיכון, מזרח אנטוליה והשבר הסורי אפריקאי במזרח התיכון. לסיכונים מתופעות אקלימיות (כגון: שיטפונות, שלג כבד ושריפות) ישנה השפעה משמעותית על האוכלוסייה, על התשתיות, על הכלכלה וגם על נכסי המורשת התרבותית באזור הים התיכון
העושר של אתרי מורשת תרבות שמאפיין את אזור הים התיכון הוא גם מקור הכנסה חשוב לארצות הים התיכון והוא גם מרכיב חשוב בזהות של האוכלוסייה הים תיכונית
